When Winning Is Still Losing

PLL episode five, "Reality Bites Me," takes a page from Sara Shepard’s third PLL novel, Perfect, and shines a spotlight on Spencer's competitive nature. Spencer has been bred to win - more like a horse than a daughter - and her father wouldn’t have it any other way. Their showdown in the kitchen was a huge step for Spence. Who knew a "friendly" game of tennis could lead to a major revelation?


Spencer came clean to her dad about her Golden Orchid essay. But he doesn’t know who she stole it from! If you were her, what would your next move be?

Yeah, she should just say there was so much stress she couldn't deal. & it's not like she's ever done anything else this bad. But if I were here i would NOT say she got it from Melissa. Seeing as how the whole Wren thing is still going on.

Honestly it doesn't matter what she tells her dad because it's obvious that she learnt how to compete from him. She took a page from his book and he can't really get upset because of that.

she should just say she took it from mellissa, her dad shouldn't care that much since shes totally acting like him. and maybe this might take the minds off of ren lol. but i kind of have a feeling that shes going to lie and say she took it from a friend then later they will find out the truth

I agree with the first commenter, Lexi. Spencer DOES have a perfectly good reason for taking the paper. She was stressed out and needed help. It wasnt like she had a history of cheating anyway. Her family is too pushy with school work and they should give her a break. ----dANIELLa

Oh the rivalry between Spencer and melissa! I love Spencer and I love how she threw her confession in her dads face! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! She should just tell who she got it from.. They're gonna find out sooner or later. She should tell before A does....

Chapter One: i sat waiting for the clock to strike ten o'clock p.m i knew that was when i was meeting my friends in front of the bar. i had a lot of friends but my closest ones were in my hood. Nikky, she's always fakin people out every chance she gets. James, has these deep dark eyes that are just filled with anger over the world. Abby, she's usually always laughing at everything she tips off cops all the time.

dylan, waiting for the right time to ask abby to date him. but never happens and finally myself, always playin it cool. i've been busted by the fuzz on more than one occasion, i've got a criminal record at the station more than a mile long. the cops know me enough by now that when something happens they haul me in. i'm proud of the way i act whats not to be proud of?

Spencer deserves a time out of society. There is so much going on in her life and therefore if Spencer explains that to her family, they will understand her situation. Afterwards, I doubt her parents will mind if she says she stole the paper from Melissa.

Her dad's a jerk. I don't like him. She should tell him it was from Melissa just to make him mad. But then again, if she did, then Melissa would be the perfect one. I don't know what I would do. And can you please stop posting your e-mail for the seals. It's getting annoying.

Even though i read the books and all....i disagree. I dont think Spencer should of copied it, knowing she would of been caught...but thats what makes it interesting....lol....i think she should tell the truth to her teacher and her dad....but who knows....

Spencer is a really good person. This is like the only super bad thing that she has done. And even if she did admit she got it from Melissa, her dad should't get upset because she was under a lot of pressure. And plus, she got her competitivness from her dad! Who could blame her though? What with this whole Wren thing...and the A thing...and trying to succeed in everything.

Spencer had a good reason to cheat her parents put way to much pressure on her and they dont seem to give her much credit for anything and i hope she doesnt tell her parents that she stole it from melissa because well they all ready are angry at her for wren kissing her

well i think that her dad is being a complete brat for getting mad cause he did the same thing i mean the girl was stressed out so what man i know what its like i take way to many aig classes and i get straight As i get 95 96 98s 99 and my mom still wants me to get straight 100s its not easy but the show helps me rellax and i listen to alot of music -----soledad ps i love the shows theme song

honestly, im really disappointed in the show. like, where is Andrew?! he plays a huge part in the books later on. where is Jason?! and SPECIALLY where is Ian?!?! Ian HAS to be one of the most important characters in the last few books. i don't understand why the directors of the show just couldn't go by the books at least a little. im really confused. and it sucks!! and who is Alex? is he replacing Andrew?? but whyyy!? soo many questions./: Anyway, i think Spencer should tell her Dad that she stole the essay from Melissa. i mean, this whole issue about the essay was completely different in the books, but if the show decides to listen to the books, Melissa and her family finds out who she stole it from anyways. P.S. whennn is the next book coming out?! im dyinggg!!!

I just wish that they made the show more like the book, it is actually pretty hard to follow if you have not read the book and it moves quite fast. I am very disappointed in the characters also, Hanna is NOT supposed to be blonde. Also, where is Spencer's mother? She plays a much bigger role in the book then Spencer's father?? Lastly, Jenna's last name is Marshall? Hasn't it always been Cavanaugh? I just wish that the show was more like the book, then I would be more interested. But, if I was Spencer, I would just tell my father I stole it from Melissa, give her the credit.

for me the series is as simalure to the books as it will get they wont make it exactly like the book because that would be boring because most people who watch the series read the books and who wants to read a book then watch almost the exact same thing it would be kind boring well for me at least all series with books dont make it almost like the book thats why they say its BASED on the book

Spencer did the right thing for stealing her sister's paper. I would have done the same thing if I was under that huge amount of pressure. I'm surprised she didn't crack before. It took her long enough to actually stand her ground.

I absolutely LOVED that scene. It was perfect and Troian played it sooo well. I watched it like 5 times just so I could see her dad's face! HAHA!

no ali has a sister not a twin but she doesnt know she does well and Spencer was right to steal it i cant even start to imagine the pressure shes under i mean 5 AP classes

I think Spencer should tell her dad why and who she copied the report from. I would hope for Melissa not to find out because then it would be harder on poor Spenc. I also think Spencer has a bigger secret then just her and wren.
