I really think I would have not adored the cover as much, if it was the "before" doll on the front. But as for the story, it would make no difference for me.

I wouldn't have known what a good book it was... i mean i had heard from friends it was good so i still would read it but i guess i would doubt that i would enjoy the series as much as i did... i hate to say it, but a cover does help make the book!! besides the doll on the un-edited picture wasn't as... realistic looking and i think that's what drew a lot of readers to the book...

hey i love these books but i think that the girls on the cover do not look like normal girls today in america. i belive these girls are too skinny. most of american teens do not look like this but try to be starving themselves or making themselves throw up to look like this and i do not think the covers should kinda promote all girls looking like sticks.

I love the Pretty Little Liar Series, and the doll on the front wouldn't have changed the story at all. But in all Honesty i do like the 2nd picture of Aria, and the cover a little bit better. I don't judge a book by it's cover either! <33333

I dont think it would have made a difference to me which doll was on the cover. i got the book because it sounded good on the little wright up inside the cover. But the second picture does make the book look better. i think it was a good idea because if a bookcover dosent look good some people just won't bother with it. :)

truly i dont judge a book by it's cover,i am 10 and i have to admit....i LOVED!!!!!!!,the book. i only got to read the second book because i was searching for a book so i can read this summer, read the back and a couple of pages....i was already intrested i catch on quickly and i already knew about all the stuff in the book....i was thinking of gtting the book earagon but my mom just looked at the cover and she thought it was gonna be good i thank her 4 chosing it i was intrested all the way not 1 word i was bored,i am looking foward to reading the next book

I don't think it should matter what is on the cover unless it doesn't have anything to do with the book. It's the story inside that counts. Plus these books are pretty awesome!

omg true! i dont know if i would have bought the book before the re-touching. but i mean it's supposed to be a doll right? so it just looks more realistic. but the truth some times does hurt way more, or just makes you look stupid. but even 1 little lie can grow into something way more, and it ends up hurting you more than the truth would have in the first place.

First of all, I only bought the book because I live on the Main Line so it wudnt have mattered how it looked. Trust me -- there are only 3 farms actually here (farm country is in Malvern, not the Main Line) and the King w/e mall (based off of the King of Prussia Mall) has a completely diff. layout. The country club is based off of what, Merion Cricket? I only know one person who lives on a farm but it is an Alpaca farm and they live in Malvern. ughh this is a bit offensive that all of you guys think we live on farms. I do go to an all-girls private school and probably am pretty spoiled but am NOT a farm girl xoxo Catherine

I honestly don't think the cover matters! It's what inside the cover that matters. I loved the book weather there was the 1st doll on it, the 2nd one, or no cover at all! :)

I love the book...And to be honest...I probably would not care if the cover was different...Sure I would think:Why the hell didn't they make a prettier doll?...But even if "Hugo",The worlds ugliest dog was on the cover...I would still admire the book,and it's beautiful characters.

Cover shouldn't make a difference of the book inside it.. so you shoud probably read the first few pages and the summary on the back, but true you ay only pick up the books that have attractive covers cause they just seem to *POP* in your face right? but anyways we would've readthe2 other books beofe so WE know that it is going to be just as good!

I think that having a different doll wouldn't have made me not buy the book, but I love the doll that they DID use because it looks so realistic and for me that was the thing: you see this pretty girl on the cover, a closer look shows that it's actually some barbie doll. I think anyone could understand that symbolism. Personally, I was instantly hooked. And about someone mentioned how the girls on the cover are too thin - that's part of the books. The books show how some girls feel pressure to stay super thin in order to be popular and go to desperate measures. Having a thin girl on the cover doesn't endorse that behavior, it just reflects the characters in the books. Besides, most of the dolls on the front don't look scary thin, just healthy thin. Which isn't exactly the most unrealistic thing in the world, nor is it detrimental at all.

Kay so I'll have to put the rest in a new post - it thought I was spamming :( Lol, sorry for taking up so much space. Here's the rest of what I wanted to say: And yeah, the fifth book, Wicked, comes out December 23rd this year (so says Wikipedia) and I'm super excited. I really love these books because of the fact that the drama is real, not just over the less important stuff that some of us, I'm including myself in here not preaching lol, find really important. The girls are facing secrets, cops, murders, stalkers, and it still has the appeal of a book about high school girls. Double thumbs up! I loooooove these books, I'm a huge fan, I've read every single one and I'm waiting for the fifth. 141 days!!! LOL

I do think that what aria looks like does influence the book because. looking at books is kinda what i judge them on. i look at books that stand out the most. and read them. and if the author (sara shepard) had actually kept the "before" shot then i probally wouldn't have been as interested. but the dolls look so real and perfect that just having a doll on the cover would have made it stand out still. because i have never seen a book with a doll on the cover. that really resembled the girls on the back. thats really cool. and i really love the pretty little liars series. the are wonderful. no they are more then that the are ahmazing books. i got my two best friends to read the books. please keep writing more.

I love love the books! I think that especially for teen girls the bright colors of the cover helps draw attention to the book. I know that's what i look for when i go book shopping. I think the dolls on the cover and the pics of the girls on the back helped give a good idea of what the girls look like and helped tell their personalities.

Even if the Aria doll looked like a totaly loser (like Hannah before LOL jk) I still would have read the books because they're dark and mysteriouse and they ROCk and ROLLZ!! I totally LOVED these books!!! But I totally agree with the cover controversy; I wouldn't have taken to the books so quickly if they had the first doll. Though I think its a good point to make about realistic appearances. Something to think about, no? I bought the first two books for something to do while on holiday, but i ended up buying the rest of the books while i was there! Im so pumped to find out what happens next, like who the new "A" is and whatnot. As to the supposed "A" leaving messages on this comment board, get over yourself hon, nobody can beat these books!! Im just glad you seem to like them as much as I do :):) Congrats to all ppl who made these fabulous stories and characters!!!

Hey guys!! I really enjoyed these books!! I could ot get over how obsessed I became with each book in the series; I had to READ MORE!! Haha :):) Each character resembled somebody in my own life, and it really help me look on the bright side of things. I can't wait to see what's coming up next. Oops, i forgot to comment on the cover!! I definitly agree that the image makes a difference on the appearance of the novel, but I dont think it should be that important. Looks have become way to advanced to be realistic anymore, loll. I think that the covers should be left as they are for now, and just let the stories behind each character, especially Hannah, let the audience know that appearance isn't everything. These books rock!!

For all these ppl asking who "A" is, I'm soooo temped to tell, but for those of us who have finished the 4th book & are wating for "Wicked" to come out, the mystery isn't totally solved ;) Girls, who's with me?! loll. I have a question, is this the author's first published work? Because she's AWESOME! haha. I think that the book's cover shouldn't matter all that much, I just enjoy looking at the real images of the character so I can picture them as I read. But i agree with "Avid Little Reader", as in the message of image isn't everything should come out through the story itself! :):) THERE SHOULD BE NO DEFINED "PERFECT" OR "LOSER" LOOK!! keep reading all! <3

If there hadn't been a touch-ups on the before doll I wouldn't have really cared because honestly the before picture looks way more like a doll than the touch-up picture. Same colors, the titles in that really pretty script. The picture doesn't take away fom the content of the book itself

for julie-just cause your 90 pounds doesnt give you the right to call other girls "fat-ish" they are skinny but just because there not as skinny as you doesnt mean they are fat and my guess would be that you are short too. my brother is 15 and is 98 pounds and is 5 feet tall and im a year younger than him and 5'8''. so just cuz you are really skinny doesnt mean everybody else is fat

Well for me when I first saw the book in the library, I was like 'okay... dolls on the cover... that's pretty cool' because the dolls were (obv.) flawless and perfect and unbelieveable. But if the dolls weren't fixed up and perfect and w/e, it would probably make a difference to me because first of all the dolls are supposed to fit with the idea of flawless and and perfect and if they didn't it would basically ruin the idea. Second, no one wants to read a book with an...ugly looking cover and a doll with knobby elbows and frayed clothes is not attractive to a reader and it doesn't look 'real.' Plus, book series and book covers aren't fun without a few pretty little lies (lol)

I agree that it was kind of mean to call those girls fattish. It just goes to show how much "perfect images" have become such a sad and pathetic part of the world. I would have bought the book no matter what the cover looked like, simply because the description of the story was amazing haha!! To all fans of the Pretty Little Liars series....thank god y'all picked something so great to cheer on!! I am tall and weigh about 120 pounds, and people are always telling me I need to gain weight. I feel confident in my own skin, and I will eat all i can and have seconds besides until I'm comfortable full. I don't feel fat when I eat, or feel fat when I'm not eating. I think that reading you call the girls "fattish" really hurt my feelings. It's comments like that, that can damage ppl a lot. The author of the PLL Series is trying to teach us that there's more than just beauty. xoxox all and keep reading these fabulous books :):):):):):):):):):)

I would have never even picked up the book had it not been for the bright color and awesome freakishly lifelike doll. I think the cover raises our expectations of the book and gives us an idea of the book bright colors=fun, hilarious plain comes off as boring, and come on who wants to read a boring book?!?!?? btw thanks for mentioning it was Aria I kept wondering who was who.

yeah i totally agree with Mandy...The girls are healthy (well maybe not hanna but you know) and they look great. everyone looks great sometime. doesnt matter who you are. and yeah most really skinny girls are like an A32 if you catch my drift ;) and even if you aren't really skinny i mean who cares? amd the 5th book is comming out December 23rd...im sooooo excited! i finished all of them within 5 hours...they're addictive!

Well isn't that how people become pretty, they need somewhere to start from and not being absolutely beautiful is a beginning point? So does it really matter what doll they have on the cover when we all know that they had to start somewhere to get somewhere and what really matters is the book. I think the quote "Don't judge a book by its cover" goes skin-deep and not just in the literal sense.

back to the "does she look good before or after" thing i think she looked more like a doll in the first and actually prettier (despite the artificialness! Is that a word?). in the after she looks like a twisted snob. I didnt like Hanna at first but when i read on i felt sry for her. The cover wouldnt have matter to me but if it had been the before i would have thought she seemed nicer faster than with the after shot.

i dont judge a book by it's cover. figurative and literally. i accutuley think that if Aria wouldn't have been rettouched, then it wouldve fit the book more. like saying these girls aren't perfect inside and out. but, no matter what, all of the Pretty Little Liars books have been amazing, and i can't stop reading. thank's so much. <3

To tell you the truth, the cover of Perfect always bothered me. She doesn't look like a real doll to me- a strange mixture between animation and photo realism. While I most definitely would not have preferred that specific doll's warped proportions- the photoshopped cover looks fakey to me. I would have preferred an actual doll photo instead of the overly animated Aria on the cover.

I would still love the book. Maybe not the cover as much, but it wouldn't have mattered because I was already way into the books to care. I finished the fourth and I loved it all. The books are addicting, so I wouldn't have cared if there was no cover at all. I might have been disappointed if the other books had good dolls on their covers, and that's as deep as the truth gets.

I adore these books. I think there could be another one, but i won't say why i think that for the people that haven't read all the book. P.S. for the part that we were supposed to be commenting on, i think that if the first picture of the Aria doll was on the front, i would have read the book, but i would have thought it was less appealing. That is only because it wouldnt match the living picture as well.

i just finished the 4th book in the series and when they said that it is a jaw dropping book they aren't lieing my jaw was literally dropped! now about the retouching with aria, yes i have to admit that she looked ugly and i may not have brought the book but i usally read the first few pages before i get a book so mabey i would have gotten the book? But if i couldnt open the book and read it then most likely no i wouldnt have gotten the book.

no, i would have still read it. honestly the only reason i ever saw the book was because my bestie shoved it in my face and threatened to beat me over the head with it if i didnt take it. so um yea...i read it. there r plenty of books out there that have HORRIBLE covers and r amazing books. i wouldve still read it but i dont exactly kno what evry1 else would do. It was an awesome book and realtes to tons of teens (only in a way more dramatic way). i cant stop reading the books now, adn i cant wait till the other 1 comes out.

I would have loved the book just as much, but thats if I picked it up with the before cover...I do judge books by their cover and title and I probably would not have picked the book up with the before picture..the picture counts a lot because it draws readers to the book.

wow. i loved all of these books. I think the cover does matter when people are looking at books. I first chose this book because of the cover. It looked interesting to me and I've stuck with the books. I finished the 4th book and it was great. I can't wait for another. And yes it should be a movie....actually 4 movies!!!

I don't really pay attention to the cover because I'm always so wrapped up in the book! The only time i look at the cover is when i search through Borders to find it and when I'm done but as long as there's a doll and Sara Shepard's name I'm fine with it!

i think that the story line would still be great but i would think that aria was not a very pretty girl cause i would use the cover as the way i see aria. the way she looks on the cover would be the way i really think she looks so i like the other one better. but the story would still be great.

Just would like to point out a mistake I found. In the middle of page 39 in "Perfect" it says that Maya's eyes are a "green-yellow" color. But on the top of page 201 in the same book, it says Maya has brown eyes. Just thought you would like to know. Anyway, I love the books, one of the best series I've read. :-)

I don't get a book because I like the cover. The cover has absolutely no effect on my judgment of a book. I would have read the book if it had no cover at all. It's not like you're looking at the cover all that much anyway. If you're reading it then it's turned away from you so you can't see it anyway, and if it's on a shelf then you can only see the side of it, not the cover. So honestly I wouldn't have cared either way which doll was on the cover. (If I cared about covers there wouldn't be any pink books in my room right now!)

The first picture of Aria was totally not cute. If thats how she looked on the cover I wouldnt have read it. I absolutley love the revisions to her before photo;she looks more like a true "IT" girl after. After all that is what she was before her life started going down hill. Well, maybe if she'd stick to students rather than teachers it would be all better. Well, I have more work to do on these pretty little liars lives. kisses!

I think the the cover would have been fine with the 'before' picture of the aria doll. It would have been ironic because the title is perfect, but the doll is not. Let's face it, Aria is far from perfect.

When i first picked up the first book of the series all i thought was " nice colour and great presentation...lets get it it should be good!" and thats why i bought it so if the books all looked like that before picture oof araya i dont think i would have ever started reading the series but im glad i did and im also glad for photo-digital retouching!!! amen to sarah shepard: ) P.S. never judge a book by its cover unless of course your a pretty little liar

Aria is my favorite character in the book. she reminds me of...well, me. eccentric creative, real. she likes being her and even though she may not like peoples opinion of her, she still isnt changing to make someone happy. i completely relate to her and thats nice....i usually only relate to people in vampire books. so her faulty picture on the cover before it was retouched well....im sure she didnt give a poop and i didnt either. I have to say though that i do judge a book by its cover. its human and animal nature. survival of the fittest and it applies to everything, even something as meanial as books, people are attracted to things that are well and pretty looking. as my mother says, "if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck and looks like a duck then it must be a duck." so nice picture means good story. honestly, though i would have read it just cuz of the amazingly simple catchy titles. again aria is my favorite character and i wish there was way more heard from her in the books, its mostly spencer and hanna. is that a clue? no idea. and somewhere in the back of my head i know whats going on but as agian my mother says, "ignorance is bliss!" and it truly is. as a fellow author and artist, i give whole heartd appreciation out to sarah and her sister alison.
