Premeditated

picture of Spencer

Melissa is Spencer's older, consistently "better" sister, but Little Miss Perfect has also had some moments that chilled us to the bone. Remember this gem from Unbelievable?

"Melissa shook her head slowly, and then made the doll in her lap shake her head, too. "It takes a very unique person to kill, and that's not you."

She tipped her teacup of vodka to the ceiling, draining it. Then, with her good hand, Melissa picked the Barbie up by its neck and popped its plastic head clean off. She handed the dismembered head to Spencer, her eyes open wide.

"That's not you at all." ~ Unbelievable, p. 81

Melissa is a girl who chooses her words very carefully. Why do you think she chose the adjective unique to describe a person who has what it takes to kill?

Comments:

She knows who did it and it was a hint to Spencer?

I think that Melissa knows who killed Alison and she likes him/her and wants to defend him/her but at the same time insult Spencer

I personally think that Melissa is close to the person who killed Ali, but not in a romantic way... like if you have finished the series, I do not think it was the person that the book says it is... Melissa is hiding someone from the world.. I WANNA KNOW WHO IT IS! I CANT WAIT TILL WANTED!!! XOXO

Maybe Melissa knows who did it but doesn't nessecarily dislike them. That could be why she said "unique" not "evil" or something. I can't wait till the next book!!!!!

That part creeped me out a lot..it made me think it was Melissa who killed Ali because she was acting so weird and suspicious. But I think she chose unique because Spencer follows in Melissa's footsteps and doesnt really choose her own path. I think she meant that the person has to be on their own and have a different style that fits them to be able to kill Ali.

0kkay so I think that she was letting Spencer know that shes not smart enough to pull of murder and she popped of the barbies head to show spencer what shes going to do to her!!!! Mwah! Samantha

I think melissa knows something. She probably used the word unique as to not give too much away and sense she obviously respects the person who did this (cause otherwise why bother keeping the secret) she didn't want to use a word that degrades them. *possible spoilers* At first I thought she was the killer after I read the barbie doll scene it just all made sense to me. Then I had doubts but in one of the last few books when Spencer's garage door has the words 'Murderer' (or Killer I don't exactly remember) spray painted to it I was like AHHH they don't mean spencer they mean melissa!!!! But who knows what's up know that there is this neww guy.

I think she said unique because the mentality of a killer is so different from that of a sane person. The individual thinks about things on a totally different plain from everyone, making that person unique.

Maybe because she is the killer?

i don't think mellissa is the killer, but i think she knows who it is. maybee she's saying it takes a "unique" person to kill because the person can just be there but not be seen, kinda? like they've always been in the series, but not enough to where we notice them immediately? ideekay? :P

I think she said that to confuse spencer. i have an inkling she knows who it is. I believe the killer is close to her but NOT a major character. but what does IRIS have to do with ali?

How about when Spencer and Melissa were seeing the therapist, and one night they were in the hot tub together? Melissa said she was almost certain Ian had cheated in high school, and said she would punish the girl if she ever found out who it was. Spencer asked 'what would you do to her?' and Melissa answered 'who says I haven't done something to her already?' another hint maybe... (i think this was book 4)

I think Melissa could be the killer, or at least knows who it is. There was also the time when Ian snuck on the porch and he looked terrified when Spencer suggested he should get Melissa to believe his little sob story. I personally think Melissa wants Spencer to know not to blame herself, because she is responsible for something. I hate to say it, but I think the Hastings family will be broken when the series ends.
