The Luxe - The Official Site :: letters-from-anna

Monday Sep 28, 2009

Hey ladies,

Thank you all for your kind wishes for my scary public appearance! It was actually really fun, and we got to discuss LOVE, always a favorite topic. There was a subtext about love versus longing, too, which was interesting-- because of course so much of the violent emotions we are talking about when we talk about love are in fact desire for some unrequited something from the object of our affections. Certainly that's the way it is in The Luxe, and that love at a distance is where so much of the drama and big feelings come in. But of course we none of us ever want to be fully sated, and holding out a little corner of longing in our hearts is probably always a good thing, don't you think?

Anyway, thank you Rachael for pointing out that characters are fragile things. They are! And I am missing the ones from The Luxe a lot these days, as I try to get used to some new ones. It's a little melancholy, I confess, and is making me very excited for one month from now, when Splendor comes out, and we all get to talk about Diana and Henry all over again!

Comments:

Anna, you really are the best author ever! So does this mean that there isn't going to be a Luxe movie coming out? I really wish that a fifth book coming out as well. Your books are just soo good that they make the readers so eager to read on and on and the they make the readers feel like they can't stop reading the Luxe books. Thats how good they are. YOU ARE THE BEST ANNA!! :)

Omg if there was a Bollywood Luxe movie coming out these following people would be perfect for the roles. Elizabeth Holland: Katrina Kaif Diana Holland: Neha Dhupia Henry Schoonmaker: Navdeep William Schoonmaker: Amitah Bachan Will Keller: ? (Any Suggestion) Maybe- Hrithik Roshan Penelope Hayes: Tamannah ? (Any suggestion?) I think this is perfect. who thinks so??

Posted by Neha on September 28, 2009 at 01:45 PM EDT #

Dear Anna, like you I cannot wait for Splendor to hit shelves. I want to know the outcome of Diana and Henry, and too see if Elizabeth ever does come out happy. I hope all things work out well, and good luck getting used to new characters :D

Im too excited for Splendor to come out. I keep delaying my reading of Envy so that I won't have to wait too long for Splendor lmao, CANT WAIT!

Posted by Diana on September 28, 2009 at 02:52 PM EDT #

Hey, Can I just say that the luxe series is one of the best series of all time ! They are so engaging! You get very much attached to the characters so I could understand why you are having trouble letting go of them! I am so stocked for Slendor to come out! I'm counting down the days! Hope to hear more from you soon, Emma xoxox

Posted by Emma on September 28, 2009 at 03:52 PM EDT #

Posted by Julia Downs on September 28, 2009 at 03:55 PM EDT #

I respect the fact that you think your characters are fragile and I understand if you'd be reluctant to make a movie, but that still doesn't stop my wanting for Splendor to come out. Good luck! ;-D

Posted by Emily on September 28, 2009 at 04:58 PM EDT #

I really want Teddy and Elizabeth to get a happy ending! I was so busy before, but now I can't dance so I'm stuck at home waiting for Splendor! I love the series! AS much as i want Splendor to come out, i don't want the series to end. luv ya! Bri

I am soooo excited for Splendor. I finally got to buy my paperback copy of Envy, and it took some of the edge off my waiting since I had to find space for it in my book shelf, but I need to find out what happens to them...preferably before November hahaha :)) Speaking of LOVE, and all that you have taught us of it, Anna, I wanted to say that I wrote an essay on Luxe and my english teacher loved it. I have to thank you. And I, personally, am very, very, very proud of the essay and one of the essay's themes was what the book had taught us, and I said all the wonderful things your books have taught us about love, and also all the broken hearts that deceit brings was my other theme. Love you and your writing...anxiously awaiting Splendor's arrival in to the big wide world where it won't be left alone to sleep on store shelfs because everyone will be so into it!!!!! :D

Posted by Amber on September 28, 2009 at 06:11 PM EDT #

Love versus longing.... Very interesting. I would have loved to hear that. I would have definitely had something to say. In some ways they are related. You long for love, or you long for your beloved to be in your arms. Oh, I could just imagine how that went. Thank you for reading my comment, Anna! I can't tell you how much it means to me. I just feel like characters are so fragile. Like a bubble. If you interfere with them they pop, just like our ideas of the characters. I am very excited for Splendor to come out. I've been anticipating this day for a long time, and as soon as those books hit the shelves I will be there.

Posted by Rachael on September 28, 2009 at 06:40 PM EDT #

I think you should make a mini series or tv movie, Mini series are about 5 epsidoes and usally an hour also i find some mini series and tv movie actors and actress are more talented also there is more time in a mini series if you consider the idea i think you should use Holly Fain as Isabella Schoonmaker, Lina Brod as Holland roden and Penelope haynes as Katie McGrath, and the girl

Posted by Rina on September 28, 2009 at 10:27 PM EDT #

hey anna can you tell us the exact date splendor comes out?

Posted by lucianna on September 29, 2009 at 03:15 AM EDT #

Splendor comes out on October 27th, in the US that is... I hoped I helped you! Bri!

Congrats on the successful public speaking. though I'm a bit bummed you haven't been able to answer my question about who and where made the Luxe jewelry

I'm so excited! 28 more days till Splendor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Emily on September 30, 2009 at 07:28 AM EDT #

Well I would just like to say that The Luxe series is my favorite. I pre-ordered it in July!!! I'm so excited that it's coming out even earlier than expected. I just finished re-reading it for the umpteenth time. I have read it so many times that people in my class know which dress belongs to which book. We all love looking at the dresses and Splendor's look amazing. They'll be so happy when I get it. :) I totally agree Megan Fox would make a great Penelope. I kinda have Taylor Swift as Elizabeth in mind??? Selena Gomez as Diana??? just random thoughts. I really wish it wouldn't end but I can see how you find them fragile. :)

Posted by Shelby on September 30, 2009 at 08:53 PM EDT #

okay for me the cast would be- Elizabeth-Blake Lively Diana- Lieghhton Meester Penelope-Michelle(person who plays Geogina) Henry-Chase Crawford Will-Penn bedgley Buck- ed person see it would be a goosip girl movie only about the luxe.... neha your acctor for it a way too old maybe younger peeps....

I'm feeling sad as the day Splendor comes out draws near. These characters have filled my mind for so long, what will I do without them?! It must be especially hard for you, since you wrote them! I hope Henry and Diana have a happy ending together.

Posted by Samantha on October 01, 2009 at 08:21 PM EDT #

I love these books! I have bought all 3 (Luxe, Rumours and Envy) books in paperback and so i would like to get splendour in paperback too. Does anyone know when the paperback back version will be released? (im in the UK!) thx xoxo Oh and if this series were a film any disney actors would ruin it because they look to young and they are not very experienced/good actors! (no offence to any disney lovers) i agree with the people reccomending the actors from Gossip Girl they are beautiful and talented! esp Leighton meestor for Diana/Penelope that would be perfect!

Posted by Ana on October 02, 2009 at 12:47 PM EDT #

Random thoughts: Taylor Momsen with her hair dyed darker could make a good Diana if there is a movie and Drew Barrymore or Scarlett Johansen would make a good Isabella Schoonmaker

ANNA YOU ARE THE BEST AUTHOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Jenna on October 02, 2009 at 04:37 PM EDT #

Dear Anna, I'm so glad everything went well and that you had fun.As for the longing and loving, I feel the same way. Love is a powerful thing,it changes you completly, it makes you glow and warms you up.Longing is painful but results from loving and wanting someone so much, but is unfortunetly seperated by someone or something. Interesting topic, loving it! In case you are wondering Anna I've never felt the kind of love Diana and Henry have. There's a shocker!!!Sigh....

Posted by Ariel on October 02, 2009 at 07:57 PM EDT #

Dear Anna, I am from Australia and currently reading Envy. I'd just like to commend you on your amazing work. I have never been so immersed in a book before, let alone three! The way you illustrate each of the characters lives is creative and makes me want to read another three or so chapters to find out what happens to the particular character! So well done on writing such successful series and I hope it doesn't stop at Splendor! Kind Regards, Emily.

Posted by Emily on October 03, 2009 at 02:58 AM EDT #

Hello Anna.I am a huge fan of your books and got four of my friends hooked on them too.But I get to read Splendor first when it comes out! I wish I was at your Public Appearance but I live in Canada. I have a question but I highly doubt I'll get the answer......Teddy doesn't DIE does he?? He is one of my favourite characters...Him,Diana and Henry. Diana is actually my favourite girl character in all the books I've ever read. So excited for Splendor! -Bella

Cool! Another Emily!

Posted by Emily on October 03, 2009 at 12:50 PM EDT #

Dear Anna, congrats on public speaking! unfortunately i wasn't able to make it to the event... I love the whole series and i am counting the days until splendor is released. This is very random but i recently read some classics by Edith Wharton and i was wondering if her work ever inspired you ... all the best, Rahel

Posted by Rahel on October 03, 2009 at 03:54 PM EDT #

Anna, Can I first say that it is so weird to be writing the date with the month first...I'm Australian and we write it date, month, year. Okay, now that that is done! lol I want to say how amazing your books are. They are really an inspiration! Diana has to be my all time favourite character! She is amazingly sweet and adventurous and has this innocent quality that I hope never goes away. She is someone I can absolutely relate to! I wanted to ask you if you have read The Tea Rose series by Jennifer Donnelly...You might love it! My favourite is The Winter Rose. It's around the same time as The Luxe Series but it's set in London. The Winter Rose (which is the second in the series) is about on of the few female doctors who trades her Lady status to make a difference in London's West end. Truely worth taking a look at! Best Wishes (and very much looking forward to Splendor!), Louisa

Rahel, Anna talks about Edith Wharton awhile back if you search through the blog pages you'll find it. I love Edith she's the best so inspirational and brave for a young lady of that time, plus she's such an amazing author, i cried sooo much with her books

Posted by Fiona on October 05, 2009 at 06:53 PM EDT #

I'm just SUPREMELY EXCITED!!!!!!!! ......Wait, supremely excited is not a word....OH WELL!!!!!

Posted by Ariel on October 05, 2009 at 08:01 PM EDT #

Dear Anna, as an avid reader, your Luxe book caught my eye at Border's while trying to find some books to read. Bought Luxe; read it in 2 days I was so hooked; bought the other 2 and am eagerly waiting to read Splendor (which I've preordered). I have gotten 3 others in my ofc. hooked as we pass the books to each other. We just hope you do justice to Diana and Henry (let them finally be united); let something really good happen to Elizabeth (we really did not like you killing off Will -- wanted him to strike it big with the oil wells and come back with Elizabeth to show all those "blankety-blanks"); want Penelope and Lina to "get theirs" for all the troubles they bestowed on Elizabeth and Diana. Okay, enough said ... you write beautifully!

Posted by Robin on October 06, 2009 at 09:50 AM EDT #

Robin! I agree with you 100%! Thats exactly what I wanted to happen! The only problem is it wouldn't be realistic, but it would have been an even better escape from life....... Luv ya, Bri!

Posted by Bridget on October 06, 2009 at 02:55 PM EDT #

Ah come on Robin! Don't you love Penelope and Lina just a little bit? I find them much mroe complex than any of the other characters and they give a little fight in their days, especially Lina. She's risen so far and while I hate her for hurting Dianna she's inspirational for going out into the big bad world and grabbing whatever you want. XOXO

Posted by Fiona on October 06, 2009 at 11:25 PM EDT #

Dear Anna, The Luxe Series is absolutely amazing. There aren't that many books in the early 1900 time period and I'm glad that you did. I couldn't put your books down so I'm excited about Splendor, though sad that it's the last book... Anyway, I wish they would make a movie based off of your books. It would be amazing to see the fashion, especially dresses. I hope you write another series as great as this one.

Posted by Paige on October 07, 2009 at 03:30 PM EDT #

Anna, wow. your books are absolutely amazing! I am an avid reader and your series makes my top 10 favorites!!! Thank you so much for putting such time and effort in these books. It feels as if I am in the early 1900s when i read them. I cannot wait for Splendor to come out. I can only hope it will be as scandalous as your previous books! Your fabulous!...love Chrissy!

Yay! its so amazing to finally find so many people who are as obsessed with reading these books as i am! first of all I'd just like to say that Anna is brilliant! all the detail she puts into every dress, person, place, and moment is so amazing. its very hard to find young adult historical fiction books, especially in that time period. i finished envy while on vacation at about midnight and i couldn't fall asleep! i was too busy worrying about what was going to happen next to henry and diana, penelope, elizabeth, and even lina! i hope splendor turns out to be just as entertaining as the first three books, yours truly, Carly <3

Holly Fain as Isabella Schoonmaker, Lina Brod as Holland roden and Penelope haynes as Katie McGrath shes in merlin, and she plays a confident and witty woman. i hope you really do make a movie one day and more books

13 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your countdown courtesy of Bri. Luv Ya!

Posted by Bridget on October 11, 2009 at 10:30 AM EDT #

do we really need a countdown? um I'll check no in that box

Posted by clair on October 11, 2009 at 01:54 PM EDT #

Hey Clair, here's some advice. If your going to insult someone, at least take the time to use capital letters (You have to press the shift button for that) and punctuation. Maybe you just said that because you resent me for actually being able to count the days until Splendor comes out. I so don't luv ya, Bri.

Posted by Bridget on October 11, 2009 at 05:34 PM EDT #

This is just for you Clair. 12 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Bridget on October 12, 2009 at 11:31 AM EDT #

umm actually its 15 more days and anna i read the 80 pages of splendor and i want to ask what are u talking about i was sooooo confused in the prologue btw i love ur prologues they really good but anyway i was really confused because u usually have a pattern when u write and u broke it but in the begining i think u were talking about lina anyway could u email me so u can answer my questions because i really want to know princessaiyanna@gmail.com

Posted by yanna on October 12, 2009 at 11:59 AM EDT #

Hey, Yanna... Are you from a country other than the U.S.? Because I'm right about the time until it comes out here. It comes out on October 27th here. It might explain why you're correcting me incorrectly. So next time take into accout location before you critize me.

Posted by Bridget on October 12, 2009 at 07:09 PM EDT #

You go Bridget!

Posted by Amber on October 12, 2009 at 09:11 PM EDT #

Wow way to be wrong on your countdown, and Bridget I'll capitalize this little comment for you, but honestly the worst thing you can say is that I don't punctuate? pathetic really seeing as this is a casual chat and I was just voicing my opinion something both of you could respect and really I'm not trying to be mean, it's just that countdowns take away from conversation space and they tend to be a bit annyoign with the exssesive use of exclamation points. So if you're going to commenton one person's bad punctuation comment on everyone's.

Posted by clair on October 12, 2009 at 10:07 PM EDT #

THe countdown could either be on both dates actaully, so don't worry no ones wrong :) it's better this way

Posted by Georgia on October 12, 2009 at 10:08 PM EDT #

I hate to say it but Clair and Yanna are right it's 15 days just recount it and all will be well

Posted by Sandy on October 12, 2009 at 10:11 PM EDT #

Hey Anna awsome that ur writting new books....but I think Meagan Fox shoudnt be penelope I think MICHELLE TRACHENBURG should she reminds me SOOOOOO muchh of Penelope it's not even funny!!! And since you kinda took thought about Meagan, does that mean u ARE planning a movie for the books? DOES IT? dOES IT??? Lol, I'm a super die-hard fan of twilight and The Luxe Theyre both AWSOME!!! ----------------------------------------------- Oooooo I almost forgot to say! IF YOU WANT TO READ PARTS OF SPLENDOR then go to harperteens . Com and then click on spleandor and youcan read the first 9 chapters of the book!! *screams* lol I can't believe Henry and Diana finally met! In a Cuban BAR!!! Lol! Thank GOD (and Anna) that Henry's not dead..lol.....And I can't believe Carolina would even treat TRISTAN like the way she did---ooo I bet Tristan is gunna do somin baaad to her lol.....

I am so excited but really sad that the Luxe books are ending! Still...I know I will keep reading these books over and over again! Thank you Anna! x

Posted by m on October 13, 2009 at 02:23 PM EDT #

'Kay, seriously, Clair, ummm i hope you realize that everything you just said is hypocritical. Don't you think you're worthless comment you just posted up there about the countdown taking away from conversation space, isn't YOUR comment taking away from conversation space? Oh, yeah, it is.

Posted by Amber on October 13, 2009 at 06:35 PM EDT #

I think everyone should forget about the countdown thing. This is a site to celebrate a book we all love, let's just talk like friends, this book did bring us all together

Posted by Fiona on October 13, 2009 at 07:17 PM EDT #

I put up the countdown to get everyone excited about the books and it seems to be backfiring. CLAIR YOU REALLY NEED TO SHUT UP. It was such a "casual chat" considering that you were being a jerk and insulting me. You were the only one being mean to me. I don't care about puntuation if you're not saying something worthless and just plain stupid. So just like to say I recounted and opps! I was wrong! I guess counting on a calender works better. So, it's 14 DAYS!!!!!!!!! Also, thanks to everyone who has been putting up nice respectful comments and let's try to get back to discussing the books. That's what the websites for, isn't it?

Posted by Bridget on October 13, 2009 at 08:33 PM EDT #

Don't worry Bri, i luvv the countdown! ;)

Good, everything is back the way it should be. Thank you so much Fiona!!

Posted by Amber on October 14, 2009 at 06:02 PM EDT #

I was thinking that how do you think the end of the Luxe will turn out? I mean with Splendor being the last book I read the first couple of pages on harperteen and I was thinking how weird it'll all be when all the lovely charecters we know will just sort of end. It's sad that their story is done. But if the books just kept being made what would happen? Everybody's been through so much that they need a break. I'm sure that a good ending though will make us all happy.

Posted by GabeFan on October 14, 2009 at 06:48 PM EDT #

I'm just glad this is all settled and I don't think clair has responded for awhile which is kinda sad because I wish we could've just respecte each other and stuff and now she wont feel comfortable posting comments :( but this was her mistake. I have to say in reply to Gabefan that I have no idea how the series will end, it's so complex that Anna could end it any way she wants and it will still be a surprise!

12 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Bridget on October 15, 2009 at 02:29 PM EDT #

Anna, I teach English at New Haven High School where I ask my students to do author profiles. They love your books (as I do) but would you lengthen and update your biographical data...PLEASE. It is so difficult to find information about you. I want them to read the books, but I don't want the standard bookreport. I want them to get to know the writer too. Looking forward to the next book. We have already devoured Splendor! Rhonda Helling

Posted by Rhonda on November 11, 2009 at 09:17 PM EST #

I read some of the posts on here and that people are commenting on how Splendor will leave us on a good and final note. I must say that I gave the book away. I was dissapointed at how it ended and would really appreciate a fifth book. to leave Henry and Penelope together and Diana off to the unknown was heartbreaking.
